About VERENIS

VERENIS is an independent international research initiative that brings together science, industry and public institutions to sustainably unlock the energy potential of the oceans for the energy transition and climate protection.

VERENIS provides an open platform for international cooperation, scientific exchange and the development of new technological approaches. Its focus is on sustainable energy systems, the exploration of previously untapped potential and the transfer of scientific knowledge into practical and viable long-term applications.

Our Role

VERENIS acts as an initiator and connecting platform for international research cooperation.

The initiative:

  • provides research impulses and identifies potential fields of investigation,
  • connects partners from science, industry and public institutions,
  • supports the development of suitable research networks and consortia,
  • promotes exchange across disciplines and national borders,
  • accompanies the development of joint project approaches.

As a general principle, VERENIS does not assume the overall scientific coordination of a research project. This role should be undertaken by a suitable university, research institution or another qualified project partner.

Why VERENIS?

The energy transition is a global challenge. Much of the knowledge, technology and infrastructure required to address it is distributed across different countries, scientific disciplines and industrial sectors.

At the same time, the oceans offer exceptional potential for the generation, storage and provision of renewable energy. Different water depths, coastal structures, wind conditions and existing infrastructures, however, place demanding requirements on future energy systems.

VERENIS sees this diversity as an opportunity. International cooperation can bring together complementary expertise, identify new research questions and enable technological solutions to be explored jointly.

Our Objectives

VERENIS aims to promote international research and support the development of sustainable, technically viable and economically relevant applications.

Its key objectives include:

  • building and strengthening international research networks,
  • bringing together scientific and technological expertise,
  • exploring new technologies, potentials and fields of application,
  • advancing integrated and sustainable energy systems,
  • investigating research questions from different perspectives,
  • supporting the transition from scientific knowledge to demonstrators and industrial applications,
  • making a measurable contribution to the energy transition, climate protection and society.
International Focus

The challenges of future energy systems do not stop at national borders. Offshore energy, maritime infrastructure, energy storage, hydrogen, grid integration and climate protection require cross-border research and coordinated approaches.

VERENIS therefore deliberately focuses on international partnerships. Different geographical conditions, technological experience and scientific specialisations are brought together. This enables research questions to be investigated more comprehensively and solutions to be developed that can be transferred to different regions and operating conditions.

Sustainability and Industrial Application – The VERENIS Approach
Our Development Path

VERENIS follows a gradual and open development approach:

Identifying ideas and research questions
New technological approaches, open questions and insufficiently explored potential are collected and structured.

Connecting suitable partners
Universities, research institutions, companies and public bodies are brought together according to their expertise and interests.

Developing research consortia
Shared interests are translated into viable international partnerships and suitable project structures.

Initiating research projects
Together with the participating partners, research objectives, work packages, funding opportunities and potential demonstration projects are developed.

Transferring knowledge into applications
The long-term goal is to translate suitable research results into practical, economically viable and industrially applicable solutions.

Research begins with ideas. Innovation emerges through cooperation. Sustainable solutions are created through scientific knowledge and its successful transfer into practice.

VERENIS aims to provide the environment in which initial research impulses can develop into international partnerships, joint projects and solutions with lasting practical value.

For VERENIS, research is not an end in itself. Sustainability comprises three interconnected dimensions:

environmental responsibility,

economic viability,

long-term benefit for society.

New technologies and energy systems should therefore not only be scientifically relevant, but also safe, scalable, resource-efficient and applicable under realistic conditions.

The long-term objective is to work with industry partners to transfer suitable research results into demonstrators, market-ready technologies and practical applications.
